Call for Nominations: Angat Bayi Fellows 2018

The University of the Philippines Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) and the UP Center for Women’s Studies Foundation, Inc. (UPCWSFI), with the support of the Government of Canada through its Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), and the Office of the Vice President (OVP), are launching the first Angat Bayi Political Empowerment Fellowship for elected women leaders. Angat Bayi recognizes the fundamental value of women’s political participation in achieving women’s empowerment and national development.

We will select 15 deserving Fellows who will attend an intensive and exclusive series of courses designed and customised specifically for them. The courses will run for three (3) consecutive days over a period of three (3) months.

Eligibility:

  1. Must be occupying the post of Mayor, Vice Mayor, or Councilor in any city or municipality in the country and is running for another term, and is running for a higher position;
  2. Nominees must be committed to the following values:
    • feminist leadership
    • inclusive, rights-based, and good governance
    • building and protection of democratic institutions and process, and
    • development of active citizenship among their constituency;
  3. Nominees must agree to their nomination

Fellowship Period:
Course I: 15-17 November 2018
Course II: 24-26 January 2019

Any Filipino citizen can nominate qualified women leaders by submitting the required application materials:

  1. Nomination letter
  2. Short essay of the nominee (maximum 1 page) on why the candidate deserves to be an Angat Bayi Fellow
  3. Curriculum Vitae of the candidate

UPCWGS welcomes new Deputy Director for Training and Outreach

The University of the Philippines Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) welcomes Prof. Excelsa C. Tongson as its new Deputy Director for Training and Outreach starting 17 July 2018. Prof. Tongson is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Family Life and Child Development, College of Home Economics, University of the Philippines, Diliman. She is currently on local fellowship and enrolled in the Doctor of Social Development program of the College of Social Work and Community Development, UP Diliman.

Call for Papers: Review of Women’s Studies

The Review of Women’s Studies is accepting articles on a rolling basis. Essays and creative works that explore the myriad experiences of Filipino women and problematize gender relations in Philippine society are welcome. Reviews of current scholarship, local or foreign, creative work (poems, short fiction, essays), drawings, and printed copy of paintings, mixed media or installation art are also accepted.

The Review of Women’s Studies is a refereed journal published twice a year by the UP Center for Women’s and Gender Studies, University of the Philippines.

The journal serves as a forum where ideas on issues and concerns affecting the lives of women, seen from the analytical perspectives of different disciplines, may be exchanged. It encourages and seeks to publish research that employ feminist methodologies and that adhere to the principles of feminist research, bearing in mind the intersectionality of gender, class, religion, age, and education.

The RWS also features interviews of women through a first-hand account of their experiences to discover and highlight ways in which they have invested their lives with meaning and dignity. Creative works that provide insights into women’s consciousness and give life to their hopes and dreams are equally welcome.

The RWS follows the double-blind peer-review process.

Guidelines for Contributors
  1. Articles must have a high degree of scholarship, and will undergo a process of review and approval for publishing by the RWS editorial board and by selected national referees.
  2. Articles may be written in English or Filipino. All articles must be accompanied by an abstract of 200 words. Articles in Filipino must be accompanied by a fairly comprehensive abstract in English.
  3. All contributions must be original, should not have been published previously, and should not currently be under review for publication elsewhere.
  4. Articles must have a maximum of 8,000 words and book/art reviews should be 6,000 words. When articles include graphs and tables, the maximum should not exceed 50 manuscript pages. All articles must be submitted in Microsoft Word .doc/.docx format.
    • Articles should be formatted in A4 paper size.
    • Margins should be 1 inch for all edges.
    • Font should be Times New Roman, font size 12.
    • The article should be accompanied by a cover sheet containing the article title, author’s name, two to three lines of biographical data that includes the author’s present position and area of work, postal address, e-mail address, and telephone number. Repeat the title on the first page of the article. The author’s name should not appear after the cover page. No identifying information about the author should be included in the submitted manuscript or the abstract.
  5. All articles should use the APA Style in text citation. Please consult the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, (6th ed.) regarding notes, references, tables, graphs, diagrams, maps and photographs.
  6. When necessary, articles should be accompanied by images and illustrations (captions included) and other relevant media elements that are to be published with the text. These should be in separate files and not embedded in the text. A separate text document file should contain a list of the images’ filenames and their corresponding captions. It is the author’s responsibility to acquire copyright permissions for work outside of public domain.

Call for Papers: Review of Women’s Studies

UPCWGS welcomes new Deputy Director for Research and Publication

The University of the Philippines Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) welcomes Dr. Marie Aubrey J. Villaceran as its new Deputy Director for Research and Publication starting 1 June 2018. Dr. Villaceran is a professor at the Department of English and Comparative Literature in the University of the Philippines, Diliman. She has a BA and MA in Creative Writing from the University of the Philippines and was conferred a PhD in Sociology by La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. She teaches and writes creative nonfiction and her research interests are gender and migration.

The new UPCWGS logo

The logo features elements that emanate from a center, representing the UPCWGS, and the ten gender offices of the CUs and campuses. All energize and propel the women’s and gender agenda in the University and society.

The logo also symbolizes the diversity of SOGIE through the hues that represent the LGBTQIA+ movement.

The purple interior shape is a recognition that the establishment of the Center was borne out of the efforts of feminists and advocates from the women’s movement.

UPCWGS welcomes new director

The University of the Philippines Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) welcomes Dr. Nathalie Lourdes A. Verceles as its new director starting 1 March 2018. Dr. Verceles is Assistant Professor at the Department of Women and Development Studies (DWDS) in the College of Social Work and Community Development (CSWCD), UP Diliman. She has previously served as Chairperson of the DWDS (2013-2016) and Director of the Doctor of Social Development Program of the CSWCD (2017).

Dr. Verceles earned her Doctorate in Social Development (2014), MA in Women and Development Studies (2003), and BA in Philosophy (1987) from UP Diliman. She also has a BSc (Honours) in Economics (1990) from the University of London. She has published and presented numerous papers on feminist economics.

The Ateneo Library of Women’s Writings (ALiWW) announces the launch of the Virginia Benitez Licuanan Award in History Writing in celebration of the 100th birth anniversary of Virginia Benitez Licuanan – writer, editor, and educator.

Established through the generosity of Dr. Patricia B. Licuanan and Mr. Francisco H. Licuanan III to honor their mother, the award seeks to widen the space for histories written by women by encouraging the production of historical writings by local Filipina authors:

  • who exhibit good scholarship,
  • whose writings are accessible to a general audience, and
  • who present original perspectives on relevant historical topics.

The theme for this year is “WOMEN IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY.” Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Notable women in Philippine History (whether as an individual, group, or community)
  • Women in the context of cultural history, political history, social history, regional or local history, personal or family history
