A Feminist Study on the Acceptability of Pregnancies for Young Women

Site of Convergence: Changes in Perception of the World and Oneself After Miscarriage

Our speaker for this event is Marcela Kościańczuk. This event is the eighth session of the “Site of Convergence: Weaving Tapestries of Knowledge” lecture series.

The lecture presents the results of qualitative research based on 21 interviews with Polish women who experienced miscarriage up to three years ago. Marcela Kościańczuk used structured interviews based on the narrative free expression and then questions based on the areas of posttraumatic growth. Kościańczuk tried to analyze if participants of the research experienced changes that may be connected with strategies of coping with stress or posttraumatic growth.
Marcela Kościańczuk works as a University Professor at the Department of Cultural Studies in Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland (Poznan). She also has an MA in Psychology and is an art therapist and psychotherapist. She has published four books based on qualitative research (sometimes visual interviews). She is an author of several articles, and a few of them are available in English. She is interested in minority studies, women studies and medical anthropology, and connections between cultural studies and psychology. Her publications are about topics such as identity of Messianic Jews, understanding of safety and unsafety among Palestinian women, relations between social understanding of health conditions and personal perspectives of cancer patients, cooperation between psychologists and cultural workers in the field of coworking with refugees in Poland.

The University of the Philippines Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) is hosting a panel discussion on The State of LGBTQIA+ Health in the Philippines on 24 June 2022 (Friday), 2:00-3:30 PM via Zoom.
Featuring voices from members of the community, policymaking circles, community-based organizations, and the academe, this webinar will be an avenue to discuss pressing health issues for the Filipino LGBTQIA+ community and ways for different sectors to collaborate.

Our speaker is Victoria G. Amos. She is an Alice Brown Scholar and PhD candidate in Social Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh, currently being sponsored by the Institute of Philippine Culture at Ateneo de Manila University as a Visiting Research Associate. She received an Integrated Master’s degree from the University of Edinburgh in 2019.
In the webinar, she will talk about two research projects. She will talk about her fieldwork conducted with UP Babaylan in 2018, which culminated in her dissertation entitled “Many Are Called, But Few Are Chosen: Navigating Validity and Authenticity amongst LGBTQ+ Youth in Urban Philippines.” She will also talk about her ongoing research, which seeks to examine the specific discourses and lived experiences of queer Filipinos in relation to the concepts of “coming out,” “being out,” and “LGBTQ+ Pride,” engaging with a broader range of demographics and methodologies in the process of data gathering/dissemination.

Arts-Based Method: Creative Workshop Video Highlights
Last year, the University of the Philippines Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) conducted the creative movement, visual, and life stories workshops with the LGBTQIA+ cluster and the North Luzon group in pursuit of the arts-based research project. The arts-based research project aims to pioneer a more innovative, engaging, and accessible approach to the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention discourse through its arts-based methodology, while also widening the constituency for advocacy by drawing on the feminist standpoint epistemology to find approaches appropriate for sectors with different perspectives.
This method can be more effective than traditional approaches in recontextualizing SRHR as more than a health and women’s concern and casting it more as a personal issue regardless of social standing and gender, and in producing and helping other organizations produce more effective and engaging knowledge products.
The video highlights were developed and produced by the Feminist Media Lab for the UPCWGS and Oxfam Philippines.

[Deadline Extended] Call for Research Proposals: 2022 UPCWGS Research Grant
[NOTE: The deadline for submission of research proposals for the 2022 UPCWGS Research Grant is extended until 1 May 2022.]
The University of the Philippines Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) is now accepting proposals for its 2022 UPCWGS Research Grant. The grant seeks to fund cutting-edge research on women and gender in the Philippines and the ASEAN region. Due to the ongoing restrictions and risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we will prioritize research that will use digital research methods or hybrid methods for data gathering.
The UPCWGS will award funding of up to PhP110,000 to seven (7) research projects on women and gender in the Philippines and the ASEAN region. Project duration should be within a six-month period with the start date on 1 July 2022. One of the project proponents should be currently affiliated with the University of the Philippines.
Proposals should follow the format indicated in the PROJECT PROPOSAL TEMPLATE (https://tinyurl.com/UPCWGSprojeprop) and use this CHECKLIST (https://tinyurl.com/UPCWGSchecklist) for formulating their budget. Submissions should also include a proof of application for an ethics clearance if research poses more than minimal risk* to human participants (in health and development research).

*A risk is minimal when the probability and magnitude of harm or discomfort anticipated in the proposed research are not greater, in and of themselves, than those ordinarily encountered in daily life or during the performance of routine physical or psychological examinations or tests (National Ethical Guidelines for Health Research 2011).
