Celebrating 25 Years of the Beijing Platform for Action – The 5th National Women’s Summit

Celebrating 25 Years of the Beijing Platform for Action – The 5th National Women’s Summit

4-6 March 2020 | Miriam College, Quezon City

Remembering What Was, Examining What Is, and Forging Ahead

The 5th National Women’s Summit marks 25 years of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA). The Summit once again seeks to bring together women from a broad range of sectors from across the Philippines, to have critical conversations about what we have achieved as feminist movements, what we continue to stand for, and where we want to go.

The 5th National Women’s Summit invites women from different generations to engage in an inter-generational and intersectional dialogue. The plenary and parallel sessions seek to unpack the issues that affect us the most, problematize our strategies for change, and critically sharpen our ways forward. The Summit provides the space to talk about our feminist agenda as locally rooted and globally informed, and how our feminist agenda can shape transformative change for our communities, institutions, and societies.

On 4 March 2020 the NWS will hold a Young Women’s Caucus, led by young feminists, for young feminists across sectors. On 5-6 March 2020 is the National Women’s Summit program proper.

Guided by the 12 critical areas of the BPfA, the Summit calls for presentations, exhibits, and participation on the following:

  1. Women and poverty – Persistent and increasing burden of poverty on women;
  2. Education and Training of Women – Inequalities and inadequacies in and unequal access to education and training;
  3. Women and health – Inequalities and inadequacies in and unequal access to health care and related services;
  4. Violence against women – Lack of integrated measures to prevent and eliminate violence against women;
  5. Women and Armed Conflict – The effects of armed and other types of conflict on women, including those living under foreign occupation;
  6. Women and the Economy – Inequality in economic structures and policies, in all forms of productive activities and in access to resources;
  7. Women in power and decision-making – Inequality between men and women in the sharing of power and decision-making at all levels;
  8. Insufficient mechanisms for the advancement of women – at all levels;
  9. Human rights of women – Lack of respect for and inadequate promotion and protection of the human rights of women;
  10. Women and the media – Stereotyping of women and inequality in women’s access to and participation in all communication systems, especially in the media;
  11. Women and the environment – Gender inequalities in the management of natural resources and in the safeguarding of the environment; and
  12. The girl-child – Persistent discrimination against and violation of the rights of the girl child.
